Air Freight (A/F)

The base air freight rate — the core cost of transporting cargo by air. A/F is quoted per kilogram of chargeable weight (whichever is higher: actual weight or volumetric weight). It represents the airline's charge for carriage and is the foundation of any air freight quote. A/F does not include fuel surcharges, security fees, or handling charges.

Negotiability

Negotiable — discuss with your freight forwarder.

Air freight rates are negotiable, especially for regular shipments. Airlines offer volume discounts, annual contracts, and spot rates. Forwarders can often secure better rates than direct carrier booking.

Formula / Calculation

Air: A/F = Shipping rate × Chargeable Weight (kg)

100kg from Shenzhen to Los Angeles. Shipping rate: USD 5/kg. Chargeable weight = max(actual 100kg, volumetric).

Total = 100 × 5 = USD 500

Express Air: A/F = Shipping rate × Weight (kg)

30kg urgent shipment from Guangzhou to London. Express rate: USD 12/kg (3-day delivery).

Total = 30 × 12 = USD 360

Frequently Asked Questions

What is chargeable weight for air freight?
Chargeable weight = max(actual weight, volumetric weight). Volumetric weight = (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 6000 for general cargo, or ÷ 5000 for courier/express. Airlines charge based on whichever is higher. A 10kg box with dimensions 40×30×20cm = 8kg volumetric but 10kg actual = 10kg chargeable.
Is A/F the same as freight charge?
A/F (Air Freight) and FRT (Freight) both represent the base transportation cost. A/F is specific to air transport; FRT is the general term. The difference is transport mode — both are negotiable base rates, separate from surcharges.
Why is air freight so much more expensive than ocean?
Air freight is 5–10x more expensive per kg than ocean freight because aircraft are far more expensive to operate, burn more fuel per unit moved, and offer limited capacity. However, air is 10x faster (5–7 days vs 14–35 days). Choose air for urgent, high-value, or lightweight goods where speed justifies the premium.
